How it works

Four simple steps, with as much time as you need between them

01

Start whenever you are ready

Open the file on a phone, tablet or computer. There is nothing to install, no account to create and no email address to give.

02

Choose initials and a password

Your initials and start date identify your saved file. Your password is the key that encrypts everything you write, so keep it somewhere safe.

03

Work through the sections

Six areas of reflection, with a short explanation before each one. Your answers save as you go, so you can stop and pick up where you left off.

04

Download it as a PDF

When you are ready, export a clean, formatted PDF to print, keep for yourself, or share with your therapist.

What's inside

The whole psychotherapy file, in six parts

The file follows the structure of the CAT Psychotherapy File. Work through the sections in order or jump to any of them from the menu — your progress is kept either way.

The Traps

The recurring patterns you find yourself caught in, and where they tend to lead.

The Dilemmas

The either/or choices that feel impossible to resolve, and what pulls you each way.

The Snags

What gets in the way when you try to make a change, and what that protects you from.

Difficult and Unstable States

Rating how often difficult states appear, and what tends to happen around them.

Different States

Naming the different states of mind you move between, in your own words.

Self-Reflection

Open space to note what you have noticed, ready to talk through in your sessions.

Curious about the detail? Open the file and read the introduction, or start a new file whenever you feel ready.

For therapists and clinics

Hand your clients the file before the work begins

Clients can complete the CAT Psychotherapy File privately, in their own time, and decide for themselves what they bring to the room.

Your clients stay in control

Nothing in a client's file is visible to you, or to anyone else, until they choose to export it and send it to you.

Nothing to set up or manage

Share the address and the tool works on any device. No accounts, no licences, and no client records held on your systems.

Usable by more of your clients

Adjustable text size, high contrast, read-aloud and full keyboard support mean fewer barriers to completing the file.

Read the accessibility statement to see how the file supports a wide range of clients.

Your data

Your answers stay yours

The Digital CAT Psychotherapy File is built to protect your personal reflections, in line with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Encrypted before it leaves your device

Everything you write is encrypted using AES-GCM on your own device, before it is saved to the server. What is stored cannot be read by anyone — including us — without your password.

Only your password opens it

Your encryption key comes from the password you choose, and your password is stored only as a one-way hash (SHA-256). There is no master key and no recovery route.

Nothing personal, nothing shared

We never ask for your name, email address or phone number. Your answers are not sold, analysed or passed to any third party, and are never used for advertising or research.

Delete it whenever you like

Starting a new file permanently removes your saved answers from the server. You stay in control of your data from beginning to end.

Accessibility

Made to be usable by everyone

The file aims to conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA and to the accessibility requirements of the UK Equality Act 2010.

Adjustable text size

Choose from Small, Medium, Large or Extra Large. Everything reflows responsively, up to 200%, with no horizontal scrolling.

Light, dark and high contrast

Three colour themes for low vision or colour sensitivity, all keeping a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1.

Read aloud

Built-in text to speech on every major content section, with play, pause and adjustable speed.

Keyboard and screen reader friendly

Every interactive element is at least 44 × 44 pixels, and the app works with VoiceOver, TalkBack and full keyboard or switch navigation.
